Fugitive Butcher Caught After Daring Prison Break
Barry Butcher, 55, was snared early this morning in the Derbyshire village of Swadlincote. The escaped convict boldly handed himself in to a Derbyshire Constabulary officer at 11:39 a.m. He remains in police custody as the investigation continues.
Escaped Life-Sentenced Burglar Nabbed
Butcher fled HMP North Sea Camp in Boston on May 31 while serving a life sentence for aggravated burglary. His capture ends weeks on the run, putting an end to a major manhunt.
Accomplice Arrested Over Abduction Link
Police also arrested a 56-year-old man last night on suspicion of aiding Butcher. He is being held on suspicion of assisting an offender connected to an abduction case.
Police Praise Public Support After Arrest
“Following a round-the-clock investigation to bring Butcher into custody, I’m pleased to say that we have now apprehended this man,” said Detective Chief Inspector Rachael Cox. “At this time, we do not believe he has committed any additional offences.” “Our appeal received overwhelming public support, and we thank everyone who shared information. It was a team effort between our officers, staff, neighbouring forces, and partner agencies that led to Butcher’s arrest.”
