Unarmed cops hailed as heroes after armed showdown in Plymouth
Brave officers nominated for top bravery award
Two unarmed Devon and Cornwall police officers have been nominated for the National Police Bravery Awards 2024. PCs Zac Printer and an unnamed colleague earned the nod after facing down an armed gunman in Plymouth during a terrifying incident in August 2021.
Gunman terrorises Keyham – officers rush to the rescue
On August 12, 2021, police received reports of an active shooter in the Keyham area of Plymouth. PCs Printer and his partner, both unarmed, sped to the scene. They were immediately alerted by bystanders to a victim – Kate Shepherd – shot at close range.
Without hesitation, the officers administered urgent first aid to the injured woman.
Confronting danger head-on
Suddenly, shouts warned that the gunman had returned to the scene. Realising the threat to the public, the two officers made a split-second decision to confront the armed attacker. They shouted commands to draw his attention and protect potential victims.
Tragically, the gunman turned the weapon on himself in front of the brave officers.
Saving lives under fire
Despite the devastating scene, PCs Printer and partner resumed lifesaving efforts, performing CPR until paramedics and doctors arrived. They also showed compassion, escorting the victim’s family to hospital.
The courage and quick thinking of these unarmed officers undoubtedly saved lives and prevented further tragedy.
Top police chiefs praise fearless duo
Police Federation Chair Nick Jones applauded the officers for their “incredible bravery and selflessness”. Acting Chief Constable Jim Colwell called their actions “the very best of policing and humankind”.
The nomination for the 2024 Police Bravery Awards recognises their extraordinary heroism under the most harrowing circumstances.
