Leicester Shock: Cyclist Seriously Hurt in Hit-and-Run E-Scooter Crash

Leicestershire Police have issued a desperate public appeal after a cyclist was badly injured in a collision with an e-scooter in Leicester city centre.

Serious Crash in Busy Leicester Street

The crash happened just after 3:45pm on Sunday, 16 March 2025, on Granby Street, a hotspot for cyclists and pedestrians. The cyclist suffered a head injury, concussion, and neck and back trauma. Emergency services rushed the victim to hospital for urgent care.

The e-scooter rider briefly stopped at the scene but then fled without sharing any details. Police are now hunting for the rider who could hold key information about the crash.

Police Launch Investigation and Desperate Appeal

The incident was reported the next day and Leicestershire Police have launched a full investigation. They’ve released an image of a man they want to identify linking him to the case.

PC Ryan Buckland: “We are appealing to anyone who recognises the individual in the photo or witnessed the collision to come forward. Your information could be vital.”

If you know anything, call 101 quoting crime reference 25*178773, or report it online via the Leicestershire Police website.

E-Scooter Dangers Spark Fresh Fears

The crash has renewed concerns over e-scooter safety in UK cities. Latest Department for Transport data shows a 20% rise in e-scooter-related incidents since 2022.

Leicestershire Police have responded by launching Operation Pedalfast, seizing more than 150 illegal e-scooters in Leicester alone. Under UK law, e-scooters are only legal on private land or as part of approved rental schemes – yet misuse is widespread and risks public safety.

Public Outcry After Hit-and-Run

The hit-and-run sparked fury online. One social media user blasted: “E-scooters are a menace in Leicester. Speeding through crowds, no regard for safety.”

Another called the crash “a wake-up call” demanding tougher laws and better enforcement to keep city streets safe.
