HMRC Tax Scam Alert: Fraudsters Demand £100 Amazon Vouchers
Action Fraud has warned the public about a nasty new scam targeting Brits. Fraudsters are calling up pretending to be from HMRC, claiming you’re accused of tax fraud and ignoring letters about it.
They then say there’s a warrant out for your arrest and hand you over to a ‘police officer’ on a phone number that looks legit – apparently from a real police station.
Fake Police Calls and Amazon Voucher Ruse
The scammers claim HMRC is working with Amazon, insisting victims must rush to the Post Office to buy several £100 Amazon vouchers. Victims are then told to send the voucher codes to the fraudster – losing hundreds in the process.
It’s all a sham. A police fraud team said: “These calls can be very distressing, especially if you’re vulnerable. It’s vital everyone warns their elderly or vulnerable friends and family.”
They added: “These fraudsters sound convincing and threatening. The idea of an arrest warrant is terrifying to anyone.”
Beware The ‘Spoofed’ Police Number Trick
The scam looks even more real because the fraudsters use a technique called ‘spoofing’ to make it appear they’re calling from a genuine police number.
The expert advice? “If you’re in any doubt, hang up immediately. Wait 30 minutes, then call HMRC back using a trusted phone number,” said the fraud team.
Remember: Genuine HMRC staff won’t mind if you confirm their identity before trusting them.
