Wightlink Ferry Catches Fire Off Isle of Wight – Passengers Evacuated Safely
A Wightlink ferry sparked panic this morning after a fire broke out on board while crossing the Solent. The blaze erupted on the bridge wing, away from passenger areas, as the vessel steamed towards Fishbourne.
Fire Breaks Out on Bridge Wing
The Lee-on-the-Solent Coastguard confirmed the fire started on the port side bridge wing shortly after 9.30am. The ferry, named St Faith, was en route from Portsmouth to Fishbourne when the emergency call was made to the fire service.
It remains unclear if anyone was injured during the blaze, but early reports suggested no casualties.
Emergency Response on High Alert
- Two fire engines from Ryde rushed to Fishbourne port.
- Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team and Cowes RNLI Lifeboat dispatched immediately.
- Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue and Hampshire Police stood by at the scene.
Passengers Evacuated, Fire Extinguished
Andy Hirst of the Solent Coastguard updated, “All passengers have been safely evacuated after the fire this morning. The vessel is now safely alongside Fishbourne ferry terminal.”
The fire has been fully extinguished with no reported injuries. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the blaze.
