Woman Killed in Shocking A19 BMW Chase Crash
A woman has died after a horror smash on the A19 in Sunderland during the early hours of Sunday.
BMW Chase Sparks Deadly Head-On Collision
At around 2:55am, Northumbria Police spotted a white BMW M135 on the A184 in Gateshead. The driver ignored police orders to stop, triggering a high-speed chase.
Minutes later, the BMW was spotted driving the wrong way – southbound on the northbound carriageway of the A19. Just before 3am, it crashed head-on into a grey Volkswagen Sharan heading north.
Tragic Casualties and Arrests
- A female passenger in her 20s died at the scene.
- A male passenger, also in his 20s, suffered life-threatening injuries and remains in hospital.
- The Volkswagen driver was treated for minor injuries.
- The 24-year-old BMW driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is in police custody.
A19 Reopened After Hours-Long Closure
The A19 was shut for several hours between Hylton Grange and the Testos roundabout while police investigated. The road has now reopened, but questions remain over the deadly chase.
