Essex Youth Workers Slash Gang Risks and Boost Activity for Vulnerable Kids

Over the past 18 months, the VVU has teamed up with Essex Council of Voluntary Youth Services and Active Essex to deploy detached youth workers in deprived areas of Essex, Southend, and Thurrock. Their mission? To steer at-risk youngsters aged 10 to 14 away from gang violence and dangerous street scenes.

Youth Outreach Making Waves

These detached youth workers hit the streets, parks, and high streets, offering safe spaces and positive role models. Their presence not only keeps kids engaged but also protects them from community risks. The results speak volumes:

  • 4,934 young people reached through detached youth work.
  • 8,321 contacts made between youth workers and youngsters, with 3,387 repeat engagements.
  • 1,850 hours of youth work rolled out across seven districts by two staff members per area.
  • Each contact costs just 48p per week – a bargain for community safety.

Trusted Faces in Tough Areas

Local groups including Essex Boys and 1 Club, Bar’n’bus, Red Balloon Foundation, Essex YMCA, Homestart, Southend YMCA, Teen Talk, Essex Youth Service, and North Avenue Youth Centre have become fixtures in their communities. After 18 months, they’re trusted allies for young people hanging out in risky zones.

Support that Goes Beyond the Streets

Youth workers offer friendly chats, advice, and guidance to youngsters facing tough choices. They also collaborate with community groups, district councils, sports outfits, and the police, creating a network of support around vulnerable youth.

Local Organisations Are Key to Success

Partner groups leverage their existing connections in schools, community centres, and youth hubs to blend detached outreach with their regular work. This approach builds trust and deepens their impact, proving that community-rooted organisations are the frontline heroes in tackling youth violence and inactivity.
