Blaze in Kennington Tower Block Sees 100 Self-Evacuate as 60 Firefighters Battle Flames
A terrifying fire broke out in a Kennington tower block, forcing around 100 residents to flee their homes. Eight fire engines and about 60 firefighters rushed to the scene on Otto Street to tackle the fierce blaze.
First Floor Flat Ravaged by Fire
The fire gutted an entire flat on the first floor, leaving it heavily damaged. Firefighters fought hard to stop the flames from spreading to other parts of the building.
Hundreds of 999 Calls Flood Fire Brigade
“Firefighters have worked exceptionally hard to get this flat under control. The whole of the first floor flat is damaged by the blaze but crews have prevented it from spreading further. Around 100 people self evacuated from the building and a number of other residents stayed within their flats,” said Station Commander Ned Alexander.
The Brigade’s control room received no fewer than 60 emergency calls early on. Thankfully, there have been no reports of injuries.
Fire Under Control Within an Hour
The fire started at 12:31 pm and was brought under control by 1:17 pm. Fire crews from Lambeth and nearby stations worked together to tackle the incident. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
