More than 70 firefighters raced to tackle two fierce grass fires tonight threatening homes in Swanley and sections of the busy M25. The flames ignited in a parched field on Beechenlea Lane and quickly spread, sending huge plumes of smoke visible from across Kent.
Huge Firefighting Effort Brings Blaze Under Control
Emergency crews scrambled with 12 fire engines and a water carrier to battle the inferno and stop it reaching nearby properties. Kent Police shut down parts of the M25 while residents faced the threat of possible evacuation. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Dangerous Conditions Fuel Fire Risk
- The recent hot, dry spell has left grass and parks extremely flammable.
- Common causes include thrown cigarettes, matches, and rubbish like glass bottles that focus the sun’s rays.
A Kent Fire spokesman warned: “Firefighters are working under tough conditions as winds shift, pushing the fire different ways. Locals should keep windows and doors closed due to heavy smoke.”
