M11 SHUT AFTER HAY BALE HGV ERUPTS IN FLAMES NEAR STANSTED
The M11 in Essex remains closed between Junction 8 (Stansted Airport) and Junction 10 (Royston) following a massive HGV fire just after 5pm on Thursday, July 19, 2018.
Blazing HGV Halts Traffic
The lorry was hauling hay bales that caught fire, sparking chaos on this busy stretch. Essex County Fire and Rescue crews rushed to the scene and have been soaked the area to stop the blaze from flaring up again.
Long Diversion in Place
Drivers are being forced onto a lengthy 30-mile diversion route:
- Exit M11 northbound at J8
- Take second exit at the roundabout onto the A120 towards Little Hadham
- Follow A120 through Stanton to the A120/A10 roundabout
- Take third exit onto A10 to the A10/A505 roundabout at Royston
- Take third exit from the roundabout onto A505 to rejoin M11 northbound at J10
Anyone heading to Stansted Airport has been warned to allow plenty of extra travel time.
Road Repairs and Recovery Underway
As of 2:46am, the M11 remains closed northbound between J8 and J10 for essential resurfacing work. Approximately 25 metres of road has been damaged and requires repairs after the blaze.
Vehicle recovery and a thorough carriageway inspection are ongoing before the motorway can reopen safely.
