Teen Missing in Thames Presumed Drowned at Richmond
A 14-year-old boy is feared drowned after slipping underwater in the Thames at Richmond.
Tragic Incident at Tagg’s Island
Emergency services were called at 4.43pm on Monday, 18 July, after the boy was spotted entering the water near Tagg’s Island in Hampton.
Police, paramedics, and the London Fire Brigade launched a massive search, joined by members of the public, but found no trace of the youngster.
Search Called Off, Family Notified
Rescue efforts were abandoned at 6.40pm, with hopes of recovering the boy’s body continuing into the evening.
His next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers.
“Despite the very best efforts of all involved, we must now sadly conclude that this young boy has died,” said Superintendent Richard Smith of the South West Command Unit. “His loss is tragic, and I can’t imagine what his family is going through. Our hearts go out to them.”
Safety Warning After Heatwave Tragedy
Superintendent Smith issued a stark warning, urging young people to avoid swimming in dangerous waters.
“On hot days like today, it might seem tempting to cool off in rivers, lakes, or reservoirs. Please don’t. The risks are real. We have seen tonight the terrible consequences when things go wrong. I encourage young people to be the voice of caution in their groups – your intervention could save a life and stop another family from suffering.”
