New Mask Rules Hit English Schools Ahead of Lockdown
Face Coverings Now a Must for Year 7 and Up
From Wednesday, government guidance demands that all staff and students in Year 7 and above must wear face coverings in communal areas outside classrooms when social distancing is impossible. This comes just before England’s new lockdown kicks off at midnight, following MPs’ approval by a majority of just one vote.
Scotland Already Ahead on School Mask Mandates
Scottish secondary school staff have been wearing masks while moving between lessons and in shared spaces for some time. Now, under Nicola Sturgeon’s new rules, 15-year-old pupils in high-risk zones must also wear face coverings inside classrooms starting this week.
The fresh rules aim to tighten safety as the UK battles rising Covid cases and prepare schools for the challenges of the lockdown.
