MRSA Superbug Outbreak Hits Queens Hospital
A serious outbreak of the MRSA “superbug” has been uncovered at Queens Hospital. Dozens of patients were found carrying the antibiotic-resistant bacteria on their skin.
How the Outbreak Was Spotted
The discovery came during routine checks, with hospital staff noticing a higher than usual number of positive MRSA cases last month. Public Health England has been alerted to the situation.
What Is MRSA?
MRSA, or Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus, is a common bacteria that around three in ten people naturally carry. The trouble is, it’s resistant to many antibiotics, making infections hard to treat.
Hospital Measures to Control Spread
“All patients are screened for MRSA on admission. Those who test positive are isolated to stop cross-infection. Staff wear protective equipment when caring for them,” the hospital trust said.
Efforts are underway to contain the outbreak, but the exact number of affected patients remains unclear. We have requested a statement from Queens Hospital for more details.
