London Hits High Alert: Tough New Covid Rules from Saturday!
London’s coronavirus alert level jumps from “medium” to “high” at 12.01am on Saturday, 17 October. Brace yourselves – stricter rules are coming to all 32 boroughs.
Key New Restrictions Everyone Must Follow
- No indoor meet-ups with anyone outside your household or support bubble – that means no friends inside your flat or local cafe.
- Outdoor gatherings capped at six people – whether it’s in your garden or the park.
- Cut down on travel where you can. If you must get about, walk or cycle, avoid busy public transport times and routes.
More Police on Patrol – Breaking Rules Means Trouble
The Met is cracking down hard with extra patrols, especially near bars and pubs in the evenings where rule-breaking is common. They’re sticking to the ‘4 Es’ – Engage, Explain, Encourage, and Enforce only as a last resort.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist warned:
“This is a critical moment in London’s fight against this deadly virus. Most Londoners will do the right thing, but we’ve seen dangerous, reckless breaches. With the alert level rising, our policing steps up.”
He added: “We will act firmly against individuals and businesses putting others at risk. Please work with us – your responsibility helps protect London’s most vulnerable.”
How to Report Rule Breakers
If you witness serious covid rule violations, call 101 or use the online reporting system. Just keep in mind, some exemptions may apply, and not every report will lead to immediate police action.
