Energy Bills Set to Skyrocket by £149 This October – Ofgem Confirms

Winter is coming with a nasty surprise for UK households. Ofgem, the UK energy regulator, has announced a sharp 10% hike in the energy price cap this October. Average bills will soar by £149, jumping from £1,568 to £1,717. That’s an extra £12 a month hitting the wallets of typical homes across England, Scotland, and Wales.

Why Are Energy Prices Surging?

Ofgem blames a turbulent international energy market, stoked by rising political tensions and extreme weather events. Despite the bite of this latest increase, the cap remains £117 lower than the peak seen last October (£1,834).

Jonathan Brearley, Ofgem’s Chief Executive, warned: “We know that this rise in the price cap is going to be extremely difficult for many households. Anyone who is struggling to pay their bill should make sure they have access to all the benefits they are entitled to, particularly pension credit, and contact their energy company for further help and support.”

Brearley urged consumers to consider switching to fixed-rate tariffs to shield themselves from further price shocks.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband Blasts ‘Failed Energy Policy’

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband slammed the price hike, calling it “deeply worrying” for millions. He pinpointed government failings for leaving Britain vulnerable to global gas market swings controlled by dictators.

“This will be deeply worrying news for many families,” Miliband said. “The rise in the price cap is a direct result of the failed energy policy we inherited, which has left our country at the mercy of international gas markets.”

Miliband says the government’s answer lies in ramping up clean, homegrown energy. Plans include scrapping the onshore wind ban, boosting solar power approvals, and delivering the biggest-ever renewables budget.

He also promised reforms to protect households, including tweaking Ofgem, fairer standing charges, and a new Warm Homes Plan to help families cut costs.

What Can Households Do Now?

  • Check eligibility for benefits like pension credit.
  • Contact your energy supplier if you’re struggling with bills.
  • Shop around for fixed-rate energy deals to lock in savings.

The brutal price cap rise offers no respite, so the sooner consumers act, the better their chances of easing the financial pinch this harsh winter.
