John Bennett, a beloved BBC broadcaster and a cornerstone of Northern Ireland’s airwaves, has died aged 82. He passed away peacefully on Friday evening, surrounded by family. Bennett’s long and celebrated career left a lasting mark on radio listeners across the region.
From BBC Radio Ulster Pioneer to “The President” of The Sunday Club
Bennett began his illustrious BBC career in 1965 and quickly became a household name. He was one of the original voices when BBC Radio Ulster launched on New Year’s Eve 1974, alongside Gloria Hunniford. Over five decades, he hosted a variety of shows, most famously The Sunday Club, the weekend music programme he helmed for 44 years. Fans fondly nicknamed him “The President” for his authoritative and warm presenting style.
A Rich Legacy of Music, Football, and Masterful Storytelling
Known for his encyclopaedic knowledge of music and love of football, Bennett also won praise as a skilled guitarist and an exceptional interviewer. His deep connection with his audience was legendary. In recognition of his immense contribution, he was awarded an MBE in January 2023 and inducted into the IMRO Radio Awards Hall of Fame later that year.

John Bennett is survived by his daughter Siobhan and son Mark. He was married for 53 years to his late wife Joan, who passed in 2020. His family remember him as a consummate professional and a dedicated mentor who inspired many.
