Black Sludge Spotted Draining onto Eastbourne Beach
Beachgoers were alarmed to see a dark substance oozing from an overflow pipe on the western end of Eastbourne Beach at the Meads.
The bizarre sight was captured by Miles Berkley, who tweeted a photo at 2:48 pm on Monday, 23rd January 2023.
Council Explains Mysterious Discharge
Eastbourne Council quickly addressed concerns. A spokesperson explained: “ESFRS dealt with a car fire on King Edward’s Parade. The water used to put out the flames and dampen the burnt car drained through the roadside drainage system, leading to the discharge.”
So, no chemical spill – just fire-fighting water making its way to the beach. Locals can breathe a sigh of relief, but the black sludge left plenty wondering what on earth had washed ashore.
