Heathrow Border Force Staff Set for Four-Day Strike in April
Over 600 Border Force officers at Heathrow Airport are preparing to strike for four days in April, the PCS union has confirmed. The industrial action is set to run from 11th to 14th April, threatening major disruption at the UK’s busiest airport.
Why Are Border Force Officials Striking?
The PCS union revealed that a staggering 90% of officials voted in favour of the walkout. The dispute centres on new roster and shift pattern changes imposed by management. The union claims these adjustments could put around 250 staff jobs at risk by the end of May.
Fran Heathcote, General Secretary of PCS, slammed the government’s handling of the situation. She said:
“Ministers have 14 days to withdraw these unfair and unnecessary proposals or our members at Heathrow will take strike action.”
Heathcote also blasted the lack of proper staff consultation, calling it a “farce” that left workers with no say. She added:
“Ripping up flexible working arrangements is no way to treat staff, especially as the government says their work is critical to our nation’s security.”
Warning of Disruption and Emotional Toll
The PCS chief highlighted the emotional strain the proposed changes are placing on Border Force staff, branding the approach “unprofessional and inhumane.” She urged the government to rethink plans, protect job security, and prioritise staff wellbeing.
This looming strike adds to growing tensions between border officials and authorities and raises fresh worries over potential chaos at Heathrow — one of the country’s key travel hubs — during the busy April period.
