Chatham Man Jailed for 15 Years Over Child Rape

A 27-year-old man from Chatham has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for raping a girl more than five years ago. Cameron Barnes from Westgate denied the charges but was found guilty on all counts at Canterbury Crown Court.

Barnes Found Guilty of Multiple Sexual Offences

  • Four counts of rape
  • One count of sexual assault on a child

Despite denying the offences, Barnes was convicted following a hard-fought trial. The victim bravely came forward after years of abuse, prompting Kent Police to launch a full investigation.

Victim’s Courage Leads to Justice

“Despite the victim’s age, and repeatedly being told it was against her wishes, Barnes subjected her to continual sexual abuse,” said Detective Constable Emily Hooper.

“It took a huge amount of courage to report his offending and face him in court when he chose to attack her character rather than admit his appalling crimes.

I am pleased we have secured justice and hope this encourages other victims of sexual abuse to come forward.”

The sentence marks a significant victory for Kent Police and sends a clear message to offenders that their crimes will not go unpunished.
