Brighton Slaps ‘No Excuse for Abuse’ Patches on Civil Enforcement Officers
Brighton and Hove Council has launched a bold new move to protect its Civil Enforcement Officers (CEOs) from abuse and violence. These officers, who keep the city’s traffic running smoothly, are now sporting striking uniform patches that send a clear warning: abuse will not be tolerated.
Zero Tolerance Patch Makes a Stand
The eye-catching patches declare “Zero Tolerance, No Excuse for Abuse,” alongside the council badge and NSL logo. NSL, working hand in hand with the council, backs this campaign aimed at safeguarding CEOs who brave tough daily conditions. The message is loud and clear — respect the people keeping Brighton moving.
Body Cameras Cut Violence, But Verbal Abuse Rises
This patch initiative follows the successful rollout of Body Worn Video Cameras in June 2023. Since then, physical attacks on CEOs have dropped noticeably thanks to solid evidence gathered for Sussex Police. Unfortunately, verbal threats have climbed, showing the fight against abuse is far from over.
Officials Rally Behind Their Frontline Officers
“CEOs do more than manage traffic — they help pedestrians, return lost items, and support emergency services,” said Councillor Trevor Muten, Chair of Transport and Sustainability. “Aggression towards them is unacceptable and affects their wellbeing. We must all show them respect.”
Stephen Parish, Account Director at NSL, added: “The Zero Tolerance patches and body cameras are crucial for deterring abuse and backing legal action. We want CEOs to feel safe and supported as they do their job.”
Brighton and Hove Council’s no-nonsense stance makes one thing crystal clear — there’s absolutely no excuse for abusing those who work tirelessly to keep the city safe and orderly.
