Brighton Dazzles with Spectacular ‘Burning of the Clocks’ Festival

Last night, Brighton erupted in light and colour for the much-loved ‘Burning of the Clocks’ – a dazzling winter solstice celebration marking the shortest day of the year. Organised by Same Sky, the event returned with a bang under the theme of ‘Clocks’, reflecting the community’s evolving relationship with time.

Thousands Parade with Handmade Lanterns

Thousands of locals took to the streets, each carrying unique handmade paper and willow lanterns crafted from kits provided by Same Sky. These glowing creations symbolised the year’s end and the hope for fresh starts, bringing a heartfelt touch to the lively parade.

Brighton Beach Lights Up with Fireworks

The vibrant procession ended at Brighton Beach, where the community gathered for the symbolic ‘burning of the clocks’. This moving ritual marked the passage of time and welcomed longer days ahead. The event climaxed with a breathtaking fireworks display that lit up the seaside night sky, creating a magical spectacle.

Community Spirit Shines Bright

Artistic Director John Varah called the event a ‘great reset’ full of ‘ticking distractions, delightful nonsense, and a thousand illuminations.’ His words perfectly captured the evening’s mix of reflection and joy as Brighton embraced the stillness of the winter night.

This year’s ‘Burning of the Clocks’ was generously supported by Arts Council England, the Chalk Cliff Trust, and local heroes including Annette Boyne. Other contributors like Sea Lanes, Hand Brew Co., Fugu PR, Brighton Fringe, Jubilee Library, Graham Carter, and Bison Beer helped make the night unforgettable.

Brighton’s winter tradition is back – lighting up the darkest day with hope, creativity, and community spirit.
