Rare Sperm Whale Strands Off Kent Coast
Rescue teams scrambled after a rare sperm whale was spotted struggling just 100 metres off Whitstable’s North Kent shore.
Volunteers Race to Scene as Whale Moves Toward Isle of Sheppey
The British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) got the alert and by 12.45pm local volunteers were on site. But the whale had already begun heading towards the Isle of Sheppey and The Swale, a tidal channel in the Thames estuary.
Initially Mistaken Identity
At first, onlookers thought the giant was a minke or humpback whale. But once photos from a Whitstable resident surfaced, experts confirmed it was actually a sperm whale — a deep-water species rarely seen near UK shores.
Fading Hope as Tide Drops
By 1.30pm, the Inshore Fisheries patrol spotted the whale swimming with the rising tide into The Swale. BDMLR volunteers tracked it from land, finding the creature in shallow water by 3pm.
Although the whale is still moving slightly, the ebbing tide dims hopes it can navigate back to deep sea. BDMLR medics are closely monitoring its behaviour and movement. More updates to follow.
