Bromley Man Runs 500km After Fire Destroys His Flat
Peter Debenham, 27, from Bromley, has smashed an incredible 500km charity run despite suffering the trauma of losing his flat to a fire. Originally aiming to run just 10K for the Chartwell Cancer Trust in May 2024, Peter’s plans changed when the event was postponed to September.
From 10K to 500km: A Challenge Grows
Refusing to let the delay stop him, Peter ramped up his ambition. He decided to tackle 500km across the summer instead, pounding the pavement with 10km runs every other day. He didn’t even miss a beat while holidaying in San Francisco!
Fire Devastates Flat But Peter Presses On
Tragedy struck in late July. After returning home, Peter’s flat was engulfed by fire that started on a neighbouring balcony. Twelve fire engines and 80 firefighters fought the blaze, forcing him to evacuate amid the chaos. The fire left severe damage not only from flames but also water, resulting in Peter being displaced for up to six months.
“It was tremendously stressful, but I couldn’t let it beat me,” Peter said. “Despite everything, I still managed to complete the challenge and donate to charity.”
Raising £1,300 for Cancer Charity
Peter’s running feat raised £1,300 for the Chartwell Cancer Trust, a cause close to his heart after losing his grandmother to cancer. His determination and grit in the face of disaster have inspired many across the local community.
Despite being homeless for months, Peter remains proud of his achievement. “The one thing that kept me going was knowing I was helping others,” he said.
