Brown-tail Moth Caterpillars Invade Ventnor – Beware!

Ventnor residents are warned to steer clear of the dreaded Brown-tail moth caterpillars. The pesky critters have been spotted again this year, bringing their nasty hairs that can cause skin irritation and breathing trouble.

Dangerous Hairs Cause Rash and Hay Fever Symptoms

Lee Matthews, Isle of Wight Council’s recreation boss, urges caution: “Avoid handling these caterpillars. Their hairs can cause skin and eye irritation, especially in children.”

These tiny barbed hairs break off easily and can lead to a rash resembling a severe nettle sting. They can even float in the air, causing eye and breathing problems like hay fever. Typically, symptoms last a few hours but can be nasty.

What To Do If You’re Stung

  • Wash the affected area thoroughly with water.
  • Apply calamine lotion to soothe the itch.
  • If symptoms persist, see a pharmacist or GP promptly.

The caterpillars can also worsen existing conditions, so vigilance is key.

The Brown-tail Life Cycle – When To Watch Out

These caterpillars gear up in spring. In March, they cluster in white tents. By April, they flood out to feed. During May, they scatter and eventually go solo before spinning cocoons.

Adult moths emerge in July and August, mate, and females lay eggs on shrub tips. Those eggs hatch into tents ready to survive winter and repeat the cycle.

Ventnor locals should stay alert and avoid the hairy threat this season!
