Ex-Rugby Star Bryn Hargreaves Found Dead After 14-Month Mystery

Bryn Hargreaves’ body has finally been found more than a year after the former rugby league pro vanished in the US, his heartbroken brother confirmed. The 36-year-old ex-St Helens forward went missing in January 2022 after failing to show up for work in Morgantown, West Virginia, sparking an intense search.

Tragic Discovery After Long Search

Bryn’s older brother Gareth broke the devastating news on Facebook. “RIP Bryn Hargreaves,” he said. “With great sadness, I can confirm that we have finally found Bryn after 14 months of searching. We still don’t know what happened on 3/1/22 or the cause of death. Thank you to everyone who assisted with the search.”

Police first became concerned when water started leaking into a nearby apartment on the day Bryn disappeared. Officers found his flat door unlocked, shower still running, and all his belongings including phone and laptop untouched. Despite a thorough manhunt and private investigator’s efforts, no solid leads emerged.

Bryn’s Struggles and Family Heartbreak

Bryn, born in Wigan, retired from rugby league aged 26 after growing disillusioned with the sport. He played 175 Super League games for Wigan Warriors, St Helens, and Bradford Bulls before moving to the US ten years ago. He worked in oil and gas and lived in Pittsburgh with his American wife, whom he met on holiday. Following their divorce, he relocated to West Virginia. His brother said Bryn felt isolated during lockdown and had considered returning to the UK.

Gareth revealed Bryn battled mental health issues. A private investigator believed Bryn might’ve taken his own life but was blocked by police from searching a local lake again. “His phone has never been accessed, and CCTV was barely looked at,” Gareth added. “It’s been frustrating not getting answers.”

Their mother, Maria Andrews, posted a heart-wrenching message: “Not something I wanted to be sharing. I’m completely heartbroken. Bryn, my lovely son. I’m at a loss for words to describe the pain xx.”

Tributes Pour In for ‘Gentle Giant’

Friends and family have paid moving tributes to Bryn, remembering him as kind and gentle. One relative called him “a gentle, reserved giant who gave you his right arm.” Another pal wrote: “RIP Bryn Hargreaves, my old mate… tragic all this carry on lately with close friends and mates from growing up and playing rugby. Pisses me right off. Rest in peace mate.”

The exact cause of Bryn’s death remains unknown. His last contact with family was on the day he vanished, January 3, 2022, and he was reported missing two weeks later after colleagues raised alarms. The rugby world and loved ones are left mourning a promising sportsman gone far too soon.
