Maidstone Crackdown: Illegal Tobacco and Vapes Raided in Bold Trading Standards Blitz
Four Shops Raided in Maidstone Town Centre
On Wednesday, August 17, 2022, trading standards officers swooped on four shops in Week Street, Lower Stone Street, and Knightrider Street. Over 15,000 illegal cigarettes, nearly seven kilos of rolling tobacco, and 1,025 unregulated vapes were seized. Some of the contraband was cleverly hidden, with a large stash dumped in bins behind one premises.
Illegal Vapes and Tobacco Fuel Crime and Risk Health
Oliver Jewell, KCC’s Principal Trading Standards Officer, slammed the rogue retailers: “We’ve advised local shops on disposable vape devices, yet a small number continue to sell illegal vapes. These products lack the strict safety checks that protect smokers looking for safer alternatives.”
He warned that illegal tobacco boosts crime in communities and keeps cheap smoke options in the hands of youngsters and those trying to quit. “We’re teaming up with partners to crack down on these shops and ensure our high streets stay safe,” Jewell added.
Counterfeit Goods and Crime Links Exposed
Officers also found over 1,300 counterfeit items in one store, including fake phone accessories, watches, jewellery, and clothes. Inspector Dave Crompton of Maidstone Community Safety Unit said:
“Our ongoing fight against organised crime sees us joining forces with Trading Standards. Illegal tobacco and counterfeit goods not only spark anti-social behaviour but damage genuine traders. These businesses may also be linked to money laundering and human trafficking. Our inspections will continue as the investigation unfolds.”
