Working smoke alarm saves lives in raging Chigwell house fire
A blazing inferno ripped through a semi-detached home on Fencepiece Road, Chigwell, this afternoon – but thanks to a working smoke alarm, the occupants escaped unharmed.
Major Fire Devastates Two Homes
The fire broke out just after 3pm, swiftly engulfing the roof and first floor of one house. Smoke and water damage also hit the neighbouring property, leaving two families reeling.
Emergency services launched a huge response with crews from Essex County Fire and Rescue and London Fire Brigade rushing to the scene with multiple units, including an Aerial Ladder Platform.
Station Manager Howard Midwood praised the teamwork, saying:
“Crews from Essex and London worked really well together to get what was a fully developed fire under control.”
“Unfortunately, one house has been severely damaged by fire and the adjoining property has also suffered smoke and water damage. Our thoughts go out to the two families affected.”
Smoke Alarm Critical in Escape
Crucially, the home’s working smoke alarm warned the occupants early, allowing them to escape without injury.
“This shows the importance of having working smoke alarms to keep your family safe,” Midwood added.
Fire crews remained at the scene into the evening, hunting for hotspots to fully extinguish the blaze.
Fire Cause Unknown – Investigation Underway
Officials have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire, which remains a mystery.
