Christmas Day Drama: Dover Lifeboat and Rescue Helicopter Race to Save Migrants in English Channel
Mayday Call Sparks Urgent Rescue
Just before 5pm on Christmas Day, the Dover RNLI Lifeboat and the Coastguard’s Rescue 163 helicopter from Lydd, Kent, were scrambled following a Mayday call. Migrant vessels spotted in trouble near the Sandettie lightvessel station in the English Channel triggered the emergency response. A French warship was already shadowing the boats as the UK rescue teams raced to assist.
Migrants in Peril Near Sandettie Lightvessel
Reports say at least one vessel is carrying around 35 to 40 migrants attempting the dangerous crossing into the UK. The Coastguard helicopter is currently circling overhead, coordinating the rescue effort. A second RNLI lifeboat from Ramsgate has also been dispatched to the scene to help recover more migrants.
