Charity Trustees Slammed with Official Warning Over Shady Recycling Bank Scandal
The Charity Commission has slapped trustees of Helping Our Future with an Official Warning after they repeatedly ignored serious concerns and failed to cooperate with the regulator. The charity, which claims to support children in the UK, Pakistan, and India, is now under heavy scrutiny.
Clothing Bank Chaos Sparks Investigation
The Commission launched a probe back in December 2016 after complaints surfaced about the charity’s use of clothing recycling banks. Allegations included that companies linked to Helping Our Future were removing rival charities’ collection banks and placing their own without landowner permission. Shockingly, the charity did nothing to stop it.
When challenged, the trustees couldn’t explain how these companies operated, how funds due to the charity were calculated, or what clothing had actually been collected. Even more worrying, there was zero evidence of trustees overseeing the money raised through these banks.
Dodgy Trustees Show No Accountability
- Hard to contact trustees — frequent changes in correspondence and canceled meetings
- Trustees showed little knowledge of their roles or the charity’s activities
- Financial responsibilities ignored — late filing of 2018 and 2019 accounts, bank account closed with no replacement
- Attempted to change charitable objectives without permission and misrepresented them online
Commission Demands Action or Faces Further Steps
The Charity Commission tried for years to engage with the trustees but were met with obstruction and silence. As a result, they have invoked their power under the Charities Act 2011 to issue a formal Official Warning, demanding specific remedial actions.
Helen Earner, Director of Regulatory Services at the Charity Commission, said:
“Good governance is not a bureaucratic detail – it underpins the delivery of a charity’s purposes to the high standards expected by the public. It’s the way in which trustees can ensure they are meeting their responsibilities to their charity and its beneficiaries.”
“The trustees of Helping Our Future did not demonstrate good governance or act even after significant concerns were raised with them. They have also been obstructive in response to our approaches. We expect the trustees to now act quickly to comply with the required actions and address our continued concerns.”
Failure to comply with the warning could see the Commission take tougher action against the trustees. The charity’s regulatory case remains open.
