Hampshire Fire Service in Crisis Over Cross-Crewing Chaos

Serious alarm bells are ringing over Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service’s (HIWFRS) ability to respond rapidly after a string of worrying cross-crewing incidents. Fire stations have been forced to scramble firefighters from multiple locations just to crew a single appliance.

Two Firefighters Only at Petersfield Sparks Major Response Shuffle

On Monday, Petersfield Fire Station was down to just two firefighters, leaving its only fire engine off the run. To keep it operational, control urgently called in two retained firefighters from Basingstoke. This bizarre patch-up saw two appliances from different stations temporarily based at Petersfield, combining crews to man one engine.

The situation spiralled further when a Petersfield firefighter signed off duty, forcing the mobilisation of two more firefighters from Waterlooville. In total, three appliances and crews from three separate locations had to be cobbled together at Petersfield just to keep one fire engine rolling.

Isle of Wight Faces Same Cross-Station Staffing Nightmare

Over on the Isle of Wight, a similar crisis unfolded over the bank holiday. Retained crews from Cowes and Sandown were drafted in to cover shortfalls, despite neither team volunteering for the emergency. Critics have blasted this as a “shocking practice” that risks safety.

Firefighters Warn System is “An Accident Waiting to Happen”

“This is nothing short of an accident waiting to happen,” said one insider. “The service has become a patchwork of soggy sticking plasters covering oversized cracks. It used to pride itself on crews knowing and working with each other. Now, we’re just cobbling together whoever’s available.”

Frontline firefighters and watchdogs warn this cross-crewing chaos threatens emergency response times and public safety. Critics say the reliance on last-minute staffing from distant stations exposes deep problems with recruitment and retention within HIWFRS.

The fire service has yet to comment publicly on these incidents, but growing unease among crews paints a bleak picture for the future of fire cover in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
