London Drivers Face New Tunnel Tolls from April 2025

Millions of London motorists will soon have to cough up for using the Congestion Charge zone and the Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels. Transport for London (TfL) has revealed fresh discounts and exemptions – but only for those who qualify.

New Tunnel Charges Kick In April 7, 2025

From April 7, 2025, drivers using the Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels in East London will face a new toll. While most must pay, TfL is offering a range of concessions to ease the pinch for eligible users.

Who Can Snag a Discount?

Discounts are up for grabs, but you must apply online and get approval first. Here’s who could save:

  • Low-Income East London Residents: 50% off if you’re on certain benefits.
  • Local Businesses: £1 off per off-peak crossing for companies signed up to Auto Pay.
  • Congestion Charge Residents: Massive 90% discount for those living within the zone.
  • Cleaner Vehicles: Electric and hydrogen fuel cell cars get 100% off the Congestion Charge, but still pay tunnel tolls.
  • Large Vehicles: Those with 9+ seats enjoy a full 100% discount on both Congestion Charge and tunnel fees.

Who’s Totally Exempt from Charges?

Some vehicles don’t pay a penny and don’t even need to register. They include:

  • Motorcycles and mopeds
  • Emergency service vehicles (ambulances, fire engines, police cars)
  • NHS vehicles exempt from vehicle tax
  • Vehicles registered for disabled drivers
  • Dial-a-Ride and community transport for disabled passengers
  • Breakdown recovery vehicles
  • Certain HM Coastguard, Port Authority, and Armed Forces vehicles
