Crane Lorry Blaze Sparks Chaos on M20

A crane lorry caught fire on the M20 motorway between Swanley and Wrotham, causing major disruption on Friday, January 5, 2024.

Firefighters Race to Tackle Flames

The blaze broke out around 1:09 pm on the coastbound carriageway between Junction 1 (Swanley Interchange) and Junction 2 (Wrotham). Kent Fire and Rescue Service quickly deployed three fire engines. Firefighters, equipped with breathing apparatus, fought the fire using powerful hose reel jets.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Traffic Chaos and Recovery

Fire crews wrapped up their operation by 3:45 pm, with four fire engines and a foam unit involved in the full response. Despite the fire being extinguished, the aftermath has left traffic snarled for hours.

Commuters heading in that direction are urged to check traffic updates before setting off. Congestion could linger as the motorway recovers.
