Major Blaze Rocks Walleys Quarry in Newcastle-Under-Lyme
Late Sunday night, a fierce fire broke out at Walleys Quarry in Newcastle-under-Lyme, sparking a huge emergency response. Multiple fire crews battled the blaze through the night to get the flames under control and protect the nearby local community.
Firefighters Hold the Line Overnight
The fire has now been mostly contained, with the number of fire engines scaled back to just two on site. Firefighters continue damping down hotspots, working alongside site staff using diggers to move waste and prevent the fire from reigniting.
Station Manager Duncan Cole said: “Crews are working closely with site staff to lift sections of waste and soak remaining hotspots. We expect to be here for several more days to make sure the fire is fully out.”
Massive Response at Peak of Fire
At its height, six fire engines, a water carrier, and a high-volume pump battled the inferno. Fire investigators are expected on site today to probe what sparked the blaze.
Residents Urged to Stay Safe
- Keep windows closed to avoid smoke inhalation
- Avoid the area where possible to allow emergency crews space to operate
Crews will remain at the quarry for days ahead, ensuring the fire is completely extinguished and no flare-ups occur. Local firefighters remain vigilant as they bring the situation fully under control.
