Crufts Cracks Down on Flat-Faced Dogs Struggling to Breathe
The world’s biggest dog show is taking a tough stance on flat-faced designer dogs with breathing issues.
New Respiratory Rules Target Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, and Pugs
Crufts, run by the Kennel Club, will now require all bulldogs, French bulldogs, and pugs to pass a respiratory fitness test before competing. Dogs scoring grade two or three on the Respiratory Function Grading (RFG) will be banned from entering.
Kennel Club Pushes for Healthier Pooches
“From 2026 onwards, all bulldogs, French bulldogs, and pugs with a grade two or grade three RFG Scheme assessment will not be eligible to attend Crufts. Previously this exclusion applied only to grade three dogs.”
This hardline move aims to improve the welfare of brachycephalic breeds by keeping out those suffering serious breathing problems. A breath of fresh air for these beloved but often unhealthy dogs.
