Shocking: Most UK Drivers Blind to Tyre Safety Rules, Putting Lives at Risk
A staggering number of UK drivers are ignoring crucial tyre safety checks, putting themselves and others in danger, new research reveals. The RAC and tyre safety charity TyreSafe have exposed the worrying lack of awareness around tyre legality and safety.
Most Drivers Don’t Know When Tyres Turn Illegal
Only 39% of UK drivers are aware that the legal minimum tyre tread depth is 1.6mm. This leaves the majority possibly driving on unsafe, illegal tyres. Drivers caught with illegal tyres face eye-watering fines of up to £2,500 per tyre plus three penalty points. Yet, many remain clueless about these severe penalties.
Alarming Lapses in Tyre Maintenance
- 26% check their tyres only occasionally or just before an MOT.
- 5% never bother checking their tyres until they fail roadworthy tests.
- Only 33% carry out monthly tyre checks, with many blaming forgetfulness or relying too much on mechanics.
Half of those neglecting checks admit it “simply doesn’t cross their mind.” A further 40% lean on garages to spot issues — but visits may be too few to guarantee safety.
Can Tech and Education Turn the Tide?
Nearly half (48%) of drivers say tyre reminders built into in-car displays would prompt them to check more often. But alarmingly, 34% say nothing would change their habits. The call for better education and awareness has never been louder.
The RAC reported 340,000 tyre-related breakdowns so far in 2024, highlighting the real dangers. Worse, tyre issues led to 185 deaths or serious injuries in 2023, up 26% on the previous year.
Money Worries Fuel Neglect
The RAC’s Report on Motoring found 19% of drivers are putting off repairs and servicing due to cash shortages, risking even more on the roads.
Experts Deliver Simple Life-Saving Advice
“Checking tyre tread and inflation takes just moments and could save lives. Use a tread depth gauge or the 20p coin 1 to see if your tyres are legal. Regular upkeep and professional servicing are key to safe motoring,” said RAC road safety spokesperson Rod Dennis.
TyreSafe chair Stuart Lovatt urges every driver to remember A.C.T:
- Air pressure: Keep tyres inflated correctly.
- Condition: Check for damage or wear.
- Tread: Ensure it’s above the legal minimum.
How to Stay Safe and Save Pounds
Drivers should make monthly tyre checks a habit and stick to recommended pressures listed in the vehicle handbook or door stickers. This simple routine boosts safety, prevents hefty fines, and even improves fuel economy.
