Medway Cracks Down on Illegal Waste and Dangerous Drivers
Medway Forces Target Dodgy Drivers and Fly Tippers
Medway’s Local Policing Team teamed up with the Roads Safety Unit, Medway Council, and VOSA on March 9, 2023, for a major crackdown against illegal waste transfers, fly-tipping, dangerous drivers, and unroadworthy vehicles.
90 Stop Checks on Ambley Road
Officers conducted 90 stop checks along Ambley Road. The haul? Three uninsured vehicles seized and one driver’s licence revoked after failing a roadside eye test. Plus, ten drivers were slapped with Traffic Offence Reports (TORs) for offences like driving without MOT or tax, illegal tints, bald tyres, and dodgy numberplates.
Fix or Face the Consequences
Two drivers were served Vehicle Defect Rectification Scheme (VDRS) notices, giving them a strict deadline to fix their faulty vehicles and get them re-tested.
Cracking Down on Waste Crime
Medway Council’s Environmental Enforcement Officers spoke to several motorists about waste carrier licences and launched an investigation into one suspect. Sergeant James Callaghan said:
“By cracking down on unsafe vehicles and dangerous drivers, we’re making Medway’s roads safer. What looks like minor defects or mods can cause serious accidents when combined with reckless driving. Illegal waste carrying often links to fly-tipping, harming our environment and rural communities. We work regularly with partners to catch offenders – and they will be prosecuted.”
Don’t Get Caught Out
Anyone looking to have waste removed must use a licensed carrier or face fines. Check the list of authorised waste carriers on the Environment Agency’s website.
