Heroic RNLI Crew Rescue Stranded Sailors in Thunderstorm Drama
Braving a brutal thunderstorm, the Newhaven RNLI crew, led by Coxswain Lewis Arnold, pulled off a daring sea rescue that saved two lives. For his fearless leadership during the perilous mission on September 18, 2023, Arnold received a “Letter of Thanks” from RNLI Head of Region Ryan Hall.
Yacht in Distress Amid Storm Chaos
The action kicked off when Solent Coastguard got a desperate distress call from a yacht caught in savage weather about half a mile south of Cuckmere. The two souls aboard faced ripped sails, engine failure, and flooding, trapped in a sinking vessel under a roaring thunderstorm.
Relentless Rescue Amid Roaring Squalls
Arnold and his six-strong Newhaven lifeboat crew—Dan Wittenberg, Danny Woodford, John Simcock, Claire Townsend, Sam Smith, and Ash Kristiansen—launched into the tempest. After spotting the yacht during a brief storm lull, they fought howling squalls and crashing waves to attach a tow line. Two failed attempts almost ended the mission, but a third try succeeded, allowing a slow, tense tow away from deadly cliffs.
Teamwork Saves the Day as Eastbourne RNLI Join In
Initially aiming for shelter in Eastbourne Bay, the team was forced to rethink because of gale-force winds. Eastbourne RNLI launched to take over the tow, helping the shaken sailors reach safety. Arnold and his crew returned to base by 6:30 am, hailed as true heroes.
