Massive Sea Search Launched off Hastings After Ship Debris Spotted

This morning saw a major search and rescue scramble off the Hastings coast after debris believed to be from a ship was spotted in the water. The operation pulled in the Navy, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), and the UK Border Force for a full-scale hunt.

Navy and Finnish Minelayer Join Intense Search

The search kicked off at 8:45am when parts of what looked like a ship were found about eight nautical miles south of Hastings. Even the Finnish minelayer FNS Uusimaa, en route from Turku, Finland to Cadiz, Spain, joined the effort, showing how seriously the situation was taken.

False Alarm as Wreckage Tied to Old Incident

Despite the huge mobilisation, the search was called off after officials confirmed the debris came from a previously known wreck. It was a sailing vessel that ran aground at Seaford Head in East Sussex back on April 19.

The quick response from multiple agencies highlights the Coast’s vigilance, even if this turned out to be a false alarm.
