Fire Ravages Royal Albion Hotel: Safety Measures Underway

The iconic Royal Albion Hotel has been badly damaged by a fire that broke out last Saturday. Emergency services are now focused on securing the building and keeping the public safe.

Firefighters Battle Overnight, Demolition Delayed

East Sussex Fire & Rescue worked tirelessly through Monday night, dousing smaller blazes and preventing flare-ups. Teams continued monitoring the site into Tuesday night, checking the building’s stability while 24/7 security guards keep watch.

The fire has pushed back demolition plans. Work will now start on Wednesday and is expected to take 2–3 weeks.

Public Safety Priority: Road Closures and Safety Zones

Authorities have set up barriers around the hotel to keep the public away from danger zones. Kings Road (A259) between the Old Steine roundabout and East Street, plus most of Pool Valley, have been cordoned off due to risks of falling debris. These closures will last throughout the demolition.

Residents near the hotel remain locked out. Officials are in contact offering support and information. Displaced residents can reach the housing team at [email protected] or call 01273 294 400 (option 1).

While businesses outside the exclusion zone may reopen, they are urged to carry out their own safety assessments.

Council Vows to Preserve Hotel’s Heritage Amid Concerns

“Due to health and safety concerns, the demolition of part of the Royal Albion Hotel has been rescheduled for tomorrow,” said Council Leader Bella Sankey. “Our goal is to salvage as much of this iconic heritage building as possible. We’ll save and reuse original features or create moulds to keep its historic character.”

Council officials have met with the UK Health Security Agency to address public health worries.

Alistair Hill, Director of Public Health, reassured: “Though asbestos was in the ceiling coatings, the risk to health is minimal. We don’t believe asbestos has spread beyond the cordoned area. Security and risk assessments continue during demolition. Residents and businesses should keep windows and doors closed if dust or smoke is noticed.”

With emergency efforts shifting to recovery, local authorities stress their commitment to a safe environment while protecting Brighton’s historic legacy.
