First-Ever UK Skytyping Display Takes to the Skies for VE Day 75th Anniversary

The Department for Transport has greenlit the UK’s very first skytyping display to mark the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day. This historic aerial tribute lit up the skies over Henstridge Airfield in Somerset, with bold messages visible from 20 miles away.

Messages of Thanks and Hope Soar 10,000 Feet High

The skytyping spelled out “We Will Meet Again” and “Thank You,” paying tribute to the heroes of World War II and saluting today’s frontline workers battling the coronavirus crisis. The huge cloud messages floated 10,000 feet above the ground, an unforgettable sight for all who witnessed.

Historic Skywriting Roots Spark Modern Tribute

This groundbreaking event was made possible by a recent law change brought in by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, allowing skytyping and skywriting displays. Skywriting has deep British roots dating back to World War I, when an RAF pilot accidentally discovered that oil vapor in aircraft exhaust could produce thick white smoke. That accidental invention soon became a clever wartime tool to confuse enemy aircraft.

Veteran Pilots Take to the Skies

The spectacular tribute was performed by military veterans from across the UK and beyond, including the RAF, French Air Force, British Royal Marines, and Royal Navy.

“Victory in Europe Day will always be a landmark in British history, and it is an honour to have commissioned the first skytyping display in the UK to mark the occasion,” said Grant Shapps.

“With its strong British 1, stemming from the creation of skywriting, it seems an entirely fitting way to honour all those who fought for our freedom while also thanking those keeping the country moving during this challenging time.”
