Revamp Brightens Up Staines Entrance
After Network Rail gave the Iron Bridge a makeover in 2022, Surrey County Council stepped in to jazz up the area beneath it. The northern pavement was widened and resurfaced to boost pedestrian safety and access. But that wasn’t all. To add a splash of local flavour, an artist was hired to paint vibrant murals on the walls under the bridge—turning this key town gateway into a stunning welcome.

The artwork captures what Staines means to its residents, melding local wildlife, iconic buildings, and deep-rooted history in one colourful display.
- The River Thames: Central to Staines’ growth, two designs showcase riverside life and the river’s winding path through the town.
- Staines Bridge: From a wooden crossing in 1228 to today’s landmark, the murals celebrate its beauty nestled over the river.
- Town Hall: Voted one of the most iconic buildings, its distinctive decorative patterns are echoed in the artwork.
- Roman Roots: Featuring iconic Roman columns and ancient geometric patterns, the murals honour Staines as a major Roman settlement.
- Roman Artefacts: Visual nods to items from Spelthorne Museum highlight local historical treasures.
- Staines Linoleum Industry: Designs echo factory patterns and floral motifs from the town’s once-famous linoleum production.
- Wildlife: Swans and foxes, popular local animals, are brought to life on the walls.
- London Stone: The iconic shape of the stone, found at Spelthorne Museum and Memorial Park, features prominently.
- Beer Brewing History: The Oast House, Ashby’s Brewery, and hops celebrate Staines’ brewing heritage.
- Mustard Farming: Illustrations show mustard plants, seeds, and the grinding process, nodding to the town’s agricultural past.
