Eight Fire Crews Battle Blaze on Scrap Metal Ship in Southampton
Hampshire Fire and Rescue have thrown eight fire engines into action to tackle a fierce fire aboard a ship docked in Southampton’s Western Docks.
Massive Fire Breaks Out in Cargo Hold
The blaze erupted at 2.51pm inside the cargo hold of a ship loaded with around 28,000 tonnes of scrap metal. The fire involves more than 7,000 tonnes of scrap metal, making it a major challenge for firefighters.
Firefighters from Across Hampshire Mobilised
Crews from Redbridge, St Marys, Hightown, Romsey, Gosport, Eastleigh, Lyndhurst, Hardley, Beaulieu, and Bishops Waltham have been called in. Altogether, over 60 firefighters and officers remain on site, battling the blaze and preventing it from spreading.
Residents Told to Keep Safe
Smoke is billowing across nearby residential areas, prompting Hampshire Fire and Rescue to urge locals to keep windows and doors shut as a precaution.
“The blaze broke out on a cargo ship carrying scrap metal at 2.51pm. We have deployed six fire appliances and support vehicles to control and contain the flames,” the fire service said.
