Emergency services were scrambled to 1 Bridge Hospital on Tooley Street in South East London after a fire broke out in a chemical-laden cleaning cupboard early Monday morning.
The blaze erupted just after 7.30am, prompting a swift response from police, fire crews, and hazardous materials experts to tackle the dangerous situation.
Hospital In Lockdown As Firefighters Tackle Blazing Chemicals
The hospital’s six operating theatres, three cardiac catheter labs, and 16 intensive care beds were immediately locked down while crews battled the fire and secured the area.
No Injuries As Fire Brought Under Control
A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: “Firefighters were called to a small fire on Tooley Street in London Bridge. A cleaning cupboard on the fifth floor was destroyed by fire. Around 40 people were evacuated safely. No injuries have been reported.”
Firefighters thoroughly checked the area for hazardous chemical levels but found none. The brigade was alerted at 7.30am and had the fire under control by 9.48am.
Two fire engines and about 10 firefighters from Dowgate and Dockhead stations tackled the blaze to ensure the hospital was made safe swiftly and efficiently.
