Bomb Alert Sparks Panic at Biggin Hill Airport
Emergency services scrambled to Biggin Hill Airport in Kent after suspected incendiary devices were uncovered during building works near the main passenger terminal. The bomb alert went off shortly after 1pm on Tuesday, 29 November.
Specialist Teams Rush to the Scene
- Met Police officers, London Fire Brigade crews, and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts raced to the site on Main Road, Biggin Hill, Westerham.
- Passengers and staff were quickly evacuated away from the affected area as the army EOD specialists were called in to assess the threat.
- Thankfully, the airport’s overall operations remain unaffected and it continues to operate as normal.
Historic RAF Site With a Dark Past
Biggin Hill Airport, once a key Royal Air Force station during the Second World War, still holds military significance. It was a crucial fighter base in the Battle of Britain, defending London and South East England from deadly Luftwaffe bombers.
Police Confirm Safe Disposal After Unexploded Ordnance Found
“We were called at 12:54hrs on Tuesday, 29 November to Biggin Hill Airport after a suspected unexploded ordnance was found during building works. Cordons were in place while specialist officers assessed the item. It was then taken for safe disposal. The airport remains open and operational,” said a Met Police spokesperson.
The cordon remains fully within airport grounds, and local authorities have confirmed that the airport is still open to the public and flights continue as usual.
