South London Rail Chaos This Easter! Buses Replace Trains at SIX Stations
Commuters in south London, brace yourselves! This Easter weekend, major engineering works will wreak havoc across six key stations. Network Rail is rolling out a massive £89 million upgrade to boost safety and reliability — but it means trains will be swapped for buses on several routes.
Which Stations Are Hit?
- Hither Green Line: Lewisham, Hither Green, Lee, Mottingham, New Eltham, Sidcup. Work: Stabilising embankments and refurbishing tracks. Replacement: Buses between Lewisham and Sidcup from Friday to Monday.
- Brixton Junction & Denmark Hill: Brixton, Denmark Hill. Work: New signalling system components being installed. Replacement: Full bus replacement during works.
- South Croydon: Whyteleafe, Whyteleafe South. Work: Upgrading Whyteleafe level crossing with modern electrical circuits.
- Balham Junction & Beckenham Junction: Balham, Streatham Hill, West Norwood, Gipsy Hill, Crystal Palace, Birkbeck, Beckenham Junction. Work: Replacing switches and crossings; prepping for future signalling upgrades.
Commuter Warning: Plan Ahead!
- Southeastern urges passengers to check travel routes before setting off — buses will replace trains on affected lines.
- Jenny Saunders, GTR Customer Services Director, warns: “Allow extra time for your journeys this weekend.”
- Scott Brightwell, Southeastern’s Operations and Safety Director, says: “Most lines will run as normal but always check for disruptions online or via journey planners.”
Network Rail and operators are racing to complete these vital improvements with minimal disruption. But if you’re travelling in south London this Easter, stay alert, expect delays, and plan your route wisely to avoid being stranded.
