Brit Entrepreneur James Asquith Takes On Aviation with New Airline

Meet James Asquith, Britain’s youngest globetrotter to visit every country and now an aviation upstart. The self-made entrepreneur is launching Global Airlines, aiming to shake up air travel by snapping up second-hand Airbus A380s—the mega double-decker planes others have ditched—at bargain prices post-pandemic.

A380: From Fallen Giant to Flying Fortress?

The A380, the world’s largest passenger plane, promised luxury and capacity for hundreds. But soaring costs and a push for greener, leaner jets led many airlines to ditch it, stopping production in 2021. Now, Asquith plans to revive the giant, betting on its spaciousness to lure flyers back.

“I think it’s the most fantastic commercial aircraft ever made,” Asquith told Sky News. “But you have to do something with that space that makes passengers want to step on board.”

Back to the Golden Age of Flying?

Once an Instagram influencer, Asquith now wants to bring back the “golden age” of flying with roomy cabins perfect for socialising. Global Airlines will focus on upgrading both economy and business class. By buying planes outright instead of leasing, he hopes to cut costs and upgrade passenger comfort.

Can He Beat Big Airlines?

Many are comparing Asquith to Richard Branson, another bold challenger to the airline giants. But experts warn it won’t be easy amid pandemic recovery, the Ukraine conflict, and soaring costs. Paul Charles, ex-Virgin Atlantic comms chief, says it’s tough for newcomers to offer low prices and attract enough premium customers.

“They fail because they can’t bring their prices down low enough and compete with bigger carriers like BA and Virgin,” Charles explained. “But they also fail because they can’t attract enough premium passengers to charge higher prices.”

Still, Asquith is undeterred. “The name says it all in our ambitions with Global,” he said. “People can be sceptics, but they always are with any plan that sounds crazy.”

Flight Path: Gatwick to New York Next Spring?

With big dreams and deep pockets, Asquith aims to have his A380s flying from London Gatwick to New York as soon as next spring. Whether he can turn his bold vision into a high-flying success will depend on winning over passengers hungry for a fresh experience—and weathering the industry’s many storms.
