The Selsey Coastguard teamed up with the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts in a high-stakes mission at Medmerry Beach. Together, they wiped out a stash of dangerous historical bombs, clearing the coast for public safety.

Alert on April 10: Coastguard Called to Potential Blast

On the evening of April 10, 2024, coastguards were scrambled after reports of suspicious objects on the beach. The EOD team arrived swiftly, carefully removing some bombs right away. But their haul wasn’t over—52 more ordnances were found needing urgent attention. Nightfall forced a pause on the operation for safety reasons.

Dawn Detonation: Controlled Explosions Secure the Beach

Bright and early on April 11, the coastguard and bomb disposal crew returned to tackle the remaining explosives. Their teamwork led to two precise controlled detonations, neutralising the entire threat by 8:30 a.m. The area was declared safe, and the teams stood down.
