Facebook and Instagram Crippled in Massive Outage
Millions across the US were left fuming on Tuesday morning as Facebook and Instagram suffered a major meltdown. Starting just after 9am ET (1pm GMT), users reported crashing apps, vanishing comments, and login blackouts.
Instagram Comments Ghost Town
Instagram users faced a bizarre glitch where comments mysteriously vanished. Though posts showed comment counts, clicking them revealed empty threads. Attempts to add new comments also failed.
“I see comments, but when I click on them it says ‘no comments, start the conversation.’ When I post one, it disappears,” one frustrated user explained.
Complaints poured in from Ohio to New York and Utah, leaving many unable to interact normally.
Facebook Login Locked Out
Facebook users hit an even worse snag — many couldn’t log in at all. Those signed out found themselves barred from signing back in, encountering persistent error messages.
“I signed out a little while ago and it was fine. Now I’m getting an error message trying to sign back in,” one user said.
Issues spanned Washington state, Houston, California, and beyond. One third of Facebook complaints focused on login problems, with the rest reporting crashes and broken pages.
Other Platforms Also Suffer
The meltdown spread beyond Meta’s flagship apps. Downdetector flagged problems on Facebook Messenger, Instacart, Indeed, and Earthlink, hinting at a widespread glitch likely linked to shared servers or infrastructure.
Users Rage on X as Outage Persists
With Facebook and Instagram down, Twitter (now X) became the venting ground for annoyed users.
“Facebook and Instagram are down again? What year is this, 2012?” one user joked.
“Of course I decide to post something important today. Thanks Meta!” another grumbled.
Outage Breakdown So Far
- Instagram: 60% of issues tied to comments section; 30% report app failures.
- Facebook: One third can’t log in; others face crashes and website bugs.
- Start time: Around 9am ET / 1pm GMT Tuesday.
- Other affected: Facebook Messenger, Instacart, Indeed, Earthlink.
No Fix Timetable from Meta
Meta remains tight-lipped, offering no official word on the outage cause or when normal service will resume. The widespread nature suggests deep server woes or botched internal updates.
Users are urged to stay patient and keep an eye on official updates via Meta’s status pages or trusted news sources.
