Massive Landfill Fire Erupts in Ringwood, 80 Firefighters Battle Blaze
A huge fire has erupted at the Veolia Blue Haze Landfill in Somerley, Ringwood, with 80 firefighters from Hampshire and Dorset scrambling to contain the blaze. The fire broke out in a massive 50ft-deep, 30ft-wide hole just after 7.30pm tonight.
High-Powered Pumps Deployed to Quell Flames
Fire chiefs have called in two high volume pumps (HVPs) capable of pumping 14,000 litres of water per minute — usually used for flood relief — to tackle the inferno. A mile of heavy-duty hoses now line the main Ringwood Road, stretching from the Veolia site into Somerley Village.
Residents Urged to Stay Indoors as Thick Smoke Billows
Nearby homes have been warned to keep doors and windows shut due to acrid smoke clouding the area. Veolia site staff have praised firefighters for their professionalism and rapid response to containing the fire.
Fire Crews Brace for Long Night Battling Blaze
“There are currently 14 fire appliances and a number of personnel at the scene,” said a Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson. “Crews are working hard to get the fire under control and are expected to stay throughout the night, with fresh teams rotating in to support those already on site since the blaze began.”
