Fire Rips Through Isle of Wight Chalet Just Days After Owner Moves In
Two fire crews from Newport are battling a fierce blaze at a chalet on the Gurnard Pines estate on the Isle of Wight. The owner had only just moved in last Friday before the fire broke out on Sunday evening.
Blaze Breaks Out at 7.30pm
Firefighters were called out shortly after 7.30pm. They’re tackling the fire using two hose reels and a covering jet. Several firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have entered the property to control the flames.
Backup Arrives as Fire Rages
Additional crews from Cowes, Freshwater, East Cowes" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">East Cowes, Ventnor, and Newport have been dispatched to support the effort. A command and control unit is also on-site coordinating the response.
Owner Attacks Bystanders Amid Chaos
“The roof and loft were well alight when crews first arrived,” said Station Manager Graham Orchard from Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. An investigation into the cause is now underway.
The distressed owner, a father of two, attacked bystanders at the scene and had to be restrained by firefighters.
By 9.26pm, six fire crews remained at the wooden property. While the blaze is now under control, firefighters expect to remain on-site for some time.
